Erga ed- Alla Fiera del libro per ragazzi di Bologna LEGGI, GUARDA E ASCOLTA. I LIBRI POLISENSORIALI ERGA/VESEPIA – Un archivio off line illimitato.

D – Marco Merli: a Bologna Erga edizioni e Vesepia presentano i libri polisensoriali.

The real reason books will endure is that we have still have books printed more than five hundred years ago surviving in excellent health and parchment scrolls from two thousand years ago, while we have no proof of the duration of electronic media. So, it is best to keep our memories on paper.

It’s a fact: smartphones, tablets, computers and consoles are stimulating
and engaging for children and adults alike, with musical entertainment, videogames, social networks and series.

That’s why we have enriched our print books
with multimedia content of various types.
And so browsing through a Vesepia book does not mean just reading it,
but enjoying a unique experience.

A multimedia dialogue that can take place in a Smart Room, which goes on the school interactive whiteboard, which builds bridges on the web and becomes a constantly updated text. It can be used with a simple mobile phone, tablet or PC.  Artists, authors and teachers talk about it. Speaker Lorenzo Palumbo, MD Vesepia. Authors: Alessio Baroni, Roberta Bedosti, Fiorella Colombo, Ennio di Francesco, Chiara Rendano.
Moderator Marco Merli (Erga edizioni)

Q – Marco Merli: at Bologna Erga edizioni and Vesepia are presenting interactive, “multisensory” books. But what do they involve? A new type of paper?
A – We could call it that, a new type of paper! The interactive, multisensory book is a unique experience, which really does involve more than one sense at the same time! It’s a book that you don’t just read, but watch and listen to as well, thanks to a fusion between print and digital media that will leave readers literally open-mouthed. The interactive book becomes a player in this scenario which goes beyond paper!

Q – Lorenzo Palumbo, how does the Vesepia app work?
A – Once the app has been installed on a smartphone, the reader can start it up and scan the covers, images or the special VesepiaCodes inside the books. The reader is engaged and experiences sensations never enjoyed before because the book speaks, plays music, shows videos, presents 3D models and projects the reader into a world of dreams with augmented and virtual reality.

Q – Marco Merli, can you give an example of what’s involved?
A – I will pass the floor to the authors to talk about their experiences. I would like to add another concept: the fact that the book becomes a memory card with unlimited content.
With offline supports like CDs and DVDs gone, how can we store information? Here the book becomes an enormous memory store with access to digital content; a true offline support because we can “insert” within the book a whole series of information “gateways”, making the true number of pages unlimited.
Homes are made to contain books, bookcases and libraries… So it makes sense to use books as an archive! “Il Sapere della mano” (bilingual: English title, The Hand, from Medicine to Art), for example, is a volume dedicated to the Savonese surgeon Renzo Mantero: a book with over 300 pages which, however, contains an archive of over 15 thousand pages of historic publications impossible to find elsewhere, as well as a collection of artworks and videos dedicated to the hand. Placing this volume on a bookshelf is the simplest way to store a huge amount of data, simpler even than a PC. Not to mention the opportunities offered by a book containing video and audio explanations by teachers. Manuals to teach English with dialogues attached. It is in schools that interactive books have really shown their worth!

Q – The authors who have created an interactive book can give us other examples. How was the experience?
Alessio Baroni (Igor Righo e l’espresso di mezzanotte) “Simple! My fantasy is a text in which the characters take central place: we have achieved this not only graphically but with animation – with the multisensory book, the characters have come to life! It’s really amazing!”
Roberta Bedosti (I mille mondi di Gea) “I don’t know how I could have done what I had in mind without the Vesepia app. My book offers linguistic games in English and Spanish, but how would I have been to produce my workshops without the voice of the mother tongue speakers? This way I was able to produce a single book with almost 50 audio tracks in three languages.”
Fiorella Colombo (Collana Recitarcantando and Teatro a scuola) “I am a veteran, I have written almost 40 books and over 20 ebooks, and with Erga I’ve been lucky enough to share the experience of the first interactive, multisensory books. Whereas before I added “simple” multimedia content on DVDs or CDs, now I have brought all the multimedia additions, the first-hand accounts and my shows inside the books. Now there’s no longer any boundary between the written world and my world of theatre!”
Ennio Di Francesco (Il ritorno del Piccolo Principe): “At my advanced age I rewrote “The Return of the Little Prince” as a comic book, with the aim of bringing a message of peace to all the children in the world. Having transformed it into a multisensory book, children of various languages and countries can now engage in dialogue together. I have been into hospitals to bring my message to children and thanks to the VesepiaCodes I have been able to do so in various languages. And I hope to add others, because this is an open book which never ends!”
Chiara Rendano (La poesia dei bambini) “I have always loved words and poetry, so I have created a book that is also a workshop to animate and present my work, above all the readings carried out with children. Using the interactive book, I have inserted dozens of audio tracks and my workshops have been transformed into a unique experience to offer to schools!”
